In recent days in various places of the world there has been a rediscovery of the person of Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero. People as diverse as Pope Francis and the Evangelical churches of El Salvador have been commemorating the life, ministry, and martyrdom of Monsignor Romero.  It is indeed important that throughout Latin America and the Caribbean remembrance be made of this fruitful and generous life, one committed to peace with the justice of God’s order.

Fortunately there are monuments to his memory and work in several places of El Salvador.  There are books, poems, and songs created by the Salvadorian people and other peoples that express the deepest sense of admiration and respect for this pastor and prophet who identified with them.   

In this brief summary of his life and martyrdom, I would like to highlight four aspects of this universal figure who belongs to us all.  I want to describe Monsignor Romero as a servant of the people in Christ’s name, as a prophetic voice, as a pastoral presence, and as one committed to proclaiming the truth and the Word as subversive memory.  I will conclude with some brief observations.

He was sent to serve in the foreign missions in El Salvador in 1950, where he aided the faithful through evangelization and the construction of churches.[1] Spessotto – like the then-Archbishop of San SalvadorÓscar Romero – spoke out against injustices on the part of the junta of El Salvador which caused him to receive a number of death threats.
