    Tyler D. Parry: What inspired you to research the life of Nellie Y. McKay? What does she represent in terms of broader contours of African American intellectual history in the latter half of the twentieth century?

    Shanna G. Benjamin: I attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and McKay was my adviser. I was inspired to research her life shortly after she died and I learned about all that she withheld from her students, her colleagues, and her friends in the academy.
