Da ihm das nötige Kleingeld fehlt und Lehrer immer knapp sind, verdingt er sich kurzerhand als Lehrer an einer High School für “Coloureds”, also für diejenigen Schüler, die auf der strikten Apartheids-Skala zwischen Schwarzen und Weißen stehen. Es fehlt nahezu an allem, die Lehrpläne sind hoffnungslos ohne Niveau und darüber hinaus hat Finnegan erst einmal gar keine gültige Aufenthalts- und Arbeitserlaubnis, aber trotzdem stürzt er sich recht idealistisch in seine neue Aufgabe.

    Er wird Zeuge der ganz alltäglichen Schikanen, denen alle Nicht-Weißen damals in Südafrika ausgesetzt waren und bemerkt auch die zunehmende Politisierung und Radikalisierung seiner Schüler, die dann im Laufe des Schuljahres in einen weitreichenden Boykott gegen das Regime mündete. Das alles beschreibt er anschaulich mit sehr genauer Beobachtungsgabe, das Lesen ist sehr spannend – vor allem natürlich (aber nicht nur), wenn man sich vor dem inneren Auge alles zumindest so grob vorstellen kann.
