  • Not long ago, a Tennessee state representative named Justin J. Pearson delivered a familiar-sounding speech at a meeting of the Shelby County Board of Commissioners. Pearson had recently taken part in a gun-control protest on the floor of the state’s House, in violation of legislative rules. He and a fellow-representative were expelled, but the commissioners in Shelby voted to reinstate him. Pearson is only twenty-eight, but his Afro evokes the Black Power era of the late nineteen-sixties, and the preacherly cadence he sometimes uses reaches back even further than that. “We look forward to continuing to fight, continuing to advocate, until justice rolls down like water, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream,” he said at the meeting, thrusting his index finger for emphasis. He was quoting the Old Testament (Amos “Let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream”), but really he was quoting Martin Luther King, Jr., who put a version of that phrase at the center of his speech at the March on Washington.

When King was assassinated, in , he was generally viewed as a leader with a mixed record. President Lyndon B. Johnson had grown frustrated with him, and he was beset by detractors who found him either too much or not enough of a troublemaker; the ye

In a nutshell wow. Let me get to wow. A few years ago I read Jonathan Eig’s Opening Day as my annual Jackie Robinson read. I read about Jackie Robinson every year and know his story well, but this book read like a story, a compelling story at that. I crossed checked with other nonfiction readers who I respect and they all noted that the books of Eig’s that they have read have all been top of the line. Even though at that point I had only read the one book, I could tell. As a primarily nonfiction reader I am always on the lookout as to what my preferred authors are writing or pursuing next. For the last few years, Eig’s news centered around his exploration of Muhammad Ali, which earned him National Book Award consideration. For his next book, however, Eig desired to tackle a topic greater than Ali. That subject, no small task, was Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. The history buffs among us would be waiting impatiently for that book, sure to be Eig’s signature work, to be published.

As a person who grew up reading biographies, I want the book to tell the person’s life story from a myriad of angles. Dr Martin Luther King, Jr has been a part of America’s ethos for over sixty years
