One of the NBA’s true marquee players for more than a decade, Dominique Wilkins earned the nickname “Human Highlight Film” with a plethora of spectacular individual plays dating back to his college years at Georgia. A member of the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1983, the high-flying 6-foot-8 forward was named to seven All-NBA teams, nine consecutive All-Star squads and is a two-time winner of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
In 1986, he won the NBA scoring title with an average of 30.3 points per game. Wilkins remains the Atlanta Hawks’ all-time franchise leader in games (882), points (23,292).
One of 22 players to score more than 25,000 points in his NBA career, Wilkins returned to the NBA in 1996-97 after one year in Europe and led the San Antonio Spurs in scoring with an 18.2 average at the age of 37.
Dominique Wilkins, a 9-time All-Star and 1-time scoring champion, was best known for his high-flying aerial acrobatics.
He left the NBA ranked seventh on the all-time scoring list with 26,534 points and 10th in career scoring average at 25.3 ppg.

Dominique Wilkins was born in 1960 in France, where his father was serving in the Air Force. After playing high school basketball in North Carolina, Wilkins came to the University of Georgia in 1979 to play for coach Hugh Durham. Wilkins lit up the scoreboard, averaging more than 21 points a game, and still holds the single-season scoring record for the Bulldogs. Georgia retired his #21 in 1991, the only men’s basketball player so honored.
From UGA to the NBA, Wilkins became one of the most exciting players in league history. Nique played 12 of his 15 seasons with the Atlanta Hawks and his slam dunks became legendary. He was a nine-time all-star, led the league in scoring in 1986, and was elected into the NBA’s Hall of Fame in 2006.
One of the greatest basketball players ever was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame on April 3, 2004, Today in Georgia History.
