Zaragoza, Spain, Jul 9 (EFE).Zaragoza, Spain, Jul 9 (EFE). — Spanish bullfighter Victor Barrio died Saturday in the bullring at Teruel during the El Angel Festival after being gored by the third bull of the afternoon. He was 29.
After being badly gored, the torero was rushed to the infirmary but doctors could do nothing to save his life, municipal officials told EFE Saturday, after announcing the suspension of the bullfighting festival.
Barrio was born May 29, 1987, and moved on from being a novice to a professional bullfighter at Madrid’s Las Ventas bullring on April 8, 2012.
In his brief career he was named Winning Novice at San Isidro, Best Novice at Bilbao, Best Novice at Santander, and took a number of gold and silver prizes around this nation of aficionados.
Barrio came late to bullfighting after working at a golf course, a job he could coordinate with his studies.
As he himself said, he took the decision at age 20: “I’ve always felt great admiration for toreros and bullfighting, but I was a little embarrassed to say I wanted to be a bullfighter and a hero like I saw them to be.”
Victor Barrio’s death in the bullring is the first in Spain up to now in this century.
